Toronto Aboriginal Support Services Council (TASSC) is in the process of gaining a new facility for their organization, which provide much-needed, high-quality and culturally-relevant services for the urban Indigenous population. Bringing together a wide variety of local Indigenous service agencies, the new offices will house operations, meetings, programs, services, gatherings, ceremony, events, and other activities.
Recognizing the TASSC founding traditional principles of friendship and collaboration, the guiding principle for the design was to maximize gathering, harmony and unity. While providing a safe and accessible space for the diverse Indigenous peoples who call Toronto home, the interior also pays respect to the specific history of Tkaronto. Playful wood ceiling features, curving walls and colourful surface treatments help transforming the bare and industrial interior into a warm and welcoming space. Â A wooden star blanket display crafted of dimensional lumber, donated from a local art installation, creates the visual centrepiece. The new facility will contain a ceremonial gathering space, offices, a board room, kitchen, and storage.
