In Partnership with The Planning Partnership

Led in conjunction with the Planning Partnership, the redesign of Moss Park in Toronto aims to honor the historical significance of Moss Creek, a lost waterway that once traversed the area, and celebrate the vital role of water in Indigenous cultures. The project integrates traditional Indigenous knowledge and contemporary landscape architecture to create a space that fosters community connection, environmental stewardship, and cultural education.

Central to the design is the restoration of Moss Creek's memory through a symbolic water feature that traces the creek's historical path. This feature serves as a reminder of the land's natural history and the importance of water as a life-sustaining force. Surrounding the water feature, native plants and trees are strategically planted to reflect the local ecosystem and provide habitats for urban wildlife, creating a green oasis within the city.

The park incorporates spaces for food forests, cultural gatherings, ceremonies, and educational programs, offering opportunities for Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to engage with the land and each other. Artistic installations by Indigenous artists, inspired by water and its significance, are integrated throughout the park, providing visual narratives that connect visitors with the land's past and present.

Sustainable design principles guide the project, including rainwater harvesting systems, permeable surfaces, and green infrastructure that mitigate stormwater runoff, further reinforcing the theme of water conservation and respect for natural resources.

This project not only revitalizes Moss Park but also serves as a powerful symbol of reconciliation, honoring Indigenous heritage and creating a space where the community can come together to celebrate the enduring connection between people, land, and water.
