Wilfrid Laurier University

Brantford, ON

$3.5 M

Completed 2010

This facility involved the conversion of a vintage, three-storey, former CIBC bank into a University lecture hall and office facility in the heart of downtown Brantford, Ontario. Design and construction challenges included slicing through 3 ft. thick concrete and steel plate walls to create openings into bank vaults and introducing mezzanine levels within expansive overhead spaces while achieving proper ceiling heights. The most significant challenge however involved locating an elevator and a series of ramps so that the entire facility could be handicap accessible. Outstanding features include a 131 person multi-media lecture theatre, executive office suites, fire stairwells, and IT rooms. Numerous existing interior appointments such as the ornate chamfered ceiling and fireplace in the main hall were successfully retained in the renovation design. The building was re-roofed and the exterior granite and limestone façade of the building was re-furbished to unify the look of each of the four vintages.
