Named Koo gaa da win Manitou, meaning “sheltering the spirit” in Ojibway, the preparation of this 3 storey, 24-unit facility involved the renovation of a vacant building and the construction of an extension. Established by Urban Native HomesIncorporated, the Koo gaa win Manitou complex addresses the shelter needs ofHamilton’s First Nation community by helping to meet the physical, holistic, mental, spiritual and emotional needs of First Nation elders.

The goal of the building design was to provide a quality facility that is safe, efficient and conducive to the lifestyle of First Nation elders. Ultimately, the building strives for the balance of providing a home-like atmosphere with the convenience and comfort of an onsite superintendent to address their needs as well.
